The Northern Netherlands AI hub focuses on developing artificial intelligence applications for healthcare and other sectors. It fits in with existing ecosystems in the northern Netherlands and initiates cross-sector AI projects, driven by the needs of businesses in various sectors.

Open Diagnostics
The Open Diagnostics Ecosystem is an initiative by LIFE Cooperative that will turn the Northern Netherlands into a global expert in the development of diagnostics. Open Diagnostics gives access to knowledge, a strong network, and research & development facilities within the diagnostics ecosystem.

dHealth develops and markets digital healthcare innovations by means of consultancy, software and lab facilities. dHealth makes the crossover between ICT and healthcare and breaks down barriers between entrepreneurs and the healthcare market.

Professors Anna Salvati and Amalia Dolga receive Parkinsonfonds Grant
Groningen, September 30, 2025 – Professors Anna Salvati (GRIP) and Amalia Dolga have been awarded EUR 450,000 from the ParkinsonFonds for research on how environmental pollutants influence brain cells in Parkinson’s disease.
Using human stem cell models, they will study how air pollution may accelerate disease progression by impacting the brain’s immune system, especially in genetically susceptible individuals. Their findings could pave the way for more personalized treatments targeting both genetic and environmental risk factors.

Dr. Michael M. Lerch awarded €1.5 million ERC Starting Grant for “TactoChem” project
Groningen, September 10, 2025 – Dr. Michael M. Lerch of the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry (University of Groningen) has secured a highly competitive ERC Starting Grant for his project TactoChem – Touch Detection Through Autocatalytic Transmission of Mechano-Chemical Signals. Over the next five years, Lerch and his team will develop novel chemical mechanosensors to imbue soft robotic systems with a real sense of touch.
