Groningen, December 5, 2024 –The Ubbo Emmius Foundation (UEF) has funded the Health Technology Research and Innovation Cluster (HTRIC) €18.4 million. This funding supports groundbreaking research in health technology and strengthens the Northern Netherlands as a leading region in this field.

HTRIC: Innovative solutions for healthcare
With this investment, HTRIC continues to build an ecosystem that connects academic expertise, technological innovation, and clinical applications. The focus is on impactful technologies such as light-activated cancer therapy and minimally invasive implant techniques, which make patient care safer and more effective. By bringing together physicians, engineers, and businesses, HTRIC brings people and domains together to achieve longer and healthier lives for everyone.

Themes of international importance
The investment focuses on four innovative research themes: molecular diagnostics, imaging, targeted therapy, and materials. These themes strengthen the foundation for technological breakthroughs in personalized care and sustainable medical solutions. They provide Northern Netherlands with a unique opportunity to further expand its existing expertise in these areas and elevate it to an international standard.

“This investment enables us to accelerate realizing our ambition: a healthier future for all. HTRIC combines science, technology and practice to bring medical innovations to patients quickly and effectively,” said Wiro Niessen, Dean of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

Strong regional impact
HTRIC not only strengthens healthcare but also drives economic growth in the Northern Netherlands. By connecting research, education, and practice, it creates a playing field for talent and innovation.
